Hellebore Festival

Hellebore Festival

Posted by Judith Knott Tyler on 20th Feb 2015

The first week of our 20th Annual Hellebore Festival is definitely a bust, even before the opening time arrives.

After a low approaching 0 and a forecast of 18 we are essentially ice or snowbound. The plants in the nursery are also frozen soild, with stems drooping and flowers with their faces in the soil. If we were to try to move them the stems would break and the blooms lost. We haven't even been able to bring all the assorted flats of blooming plants up to the sales house as we usually do because the pots are frozen into their flats and we would do so much damage moving them that it is useless to try.

Our friends, John Lonsdale and Jason Stevens are also waiting a week to bring out their plants.  Cliff Parks will bring his Primula next week as well.

We will just have to hunker down with a cat and a kindle and wait for warmer weather. Surely next weekend will be better.
