A tender species from Majorca is not hardy
in my zone 7 garden, but usually blooms the first year. The

Helleborus niger 'Blackthorn' Strain H. niger
'Blackthorn' Strain
This is an excellent form grown
from plants we purchased at Robin and Sue White's wonderful Blackthorn
Nursery. The stems, petioles and often the anthers are an enchanting
ripe berry rose, and the flowers turn pink very shortly after opening.
Everyone who sees the group in our garden wants the
plants.

were given our original plant of this strain by our friends at Plant
Delights who originally got stock from NC plantsman Bobby WIlder. The
flowers of this strain are very large (to 5") stars shaped and often
age pink.
