About Helleborus x ballardiae

H x ballardiae is a hybrid between H. niger and H.
lividus. This cross is named for Helen Ballard who popularized the cross. Since
H. lividus is a tender (Zone 8) plant, there is some concern that this
cross may not be as hardy as some of the other interspecies hybrids.
Therefore until they are proved hardy we are being very conservative
with our zone listings. Most
clones we have seen have a good degree of the pink to mauve colouration
from H. lividus but retain the flower shape of H. niger. Since H.
lividus is a tender (Zone 8) plant, there is some concern that this
cross may not be as hardy as some of the other interspecies hybrids.
About interspecies hybrids in general The blood from both parents is visible in the offspring to
varying degrees. Just as with humans a child may resemble one of it's
parents, be a mixture of both, or skip back a generation and resemble a
relative. Since each individual parent pair is unique, each hybrid
will be slightly different while still resembling the "family".
This is the reason various clones of the interspecies hybrids may
sound similar in verbal descriptions but each clone will have
individual properties and a distinct appearance. Most are sterile.
