Other inter and intra species hybrids. Since
there are a number of different species of Helleborus, breeders
have a wealth of material to work with when the itch to make something
new hits. Since H. niger can work as a bridge between the different
groups, it is often used as one of the parents. While there are many
different crosses lurking in breeders nurseries and gardens there are
only a hand full on the market currently. Besides the "Big Four" H. x
ballardiae, H. x ericsmithii and H. x nigercors and H. x sternii, only
two other crosses have made it onto the US market. These two are
H. x 'Walburton's Rosemary' and H. x 'Snow White', both examples of a
cross between H. niger and H. x hybridus. This cross is difficult to
achieve and was long thought to be impossible. Another example of
the old axiom "Perseverance Furthers". There are a handful of
other crosses just around the corner, so watch this space.
