About Helleborus x ericsmithii

Named
for famed British plantsman Eric Smith, Helleborus x ericsmithii is
perhaps the most widely represented of the new interspecies hybrids.
This hybrid is fairly complex, being the offspring of H. niger
and H x sternii. Since H. x sternii is a fertile hybrid, from H.
argutifolius and H. lividus the family tree has a few extra branches. There
are at least a dozen different clones of H. x ericsmithii on the market
now, each has slightly different amounts of pink, mauve, cream or green
in the flowers and varying degrees of silver, marbling and serration in
the foliage. Some clones are short and wide while others are taller and
not as stocky. Just like our family! About interspecies hybrids in general. The blood from both parents is visible in the offspring to
varying degrees. Just as with humans a child may resemble one of it's
parents, be a mixture of both, or skip back a generation and resemble a
relative. Since each individual parent pair is unique, each hybrid
will be slightly different while still resembling the "family".
This is the reason various clones of the interspecies hybrids may
sound similar in verbal descriptions but each clone will have
individual properties and a distinct appearance. Most are sterile.
